Lourdes Reyes of BallSB on Delphinium Sea Waltz:
“Wow, how a grower can exceed the expectations of a breeder”, says Lourdes Reyes of BallSB when seeing the Sea Waltz delphinium shown by Ecuadorian growers Florisol and Valleflor at the Expo Flor Ecuador in Quito. “With the growing cultivations that these growers are developing, they get these tall, beautiful, and true blue Belladonna type Delphiniums. We will for sure see more often in grand and amazing flower arrangements.”

The variety is bred by Miyoshi in Japan and Ball is distributing to North- Central- and South America and Eastern Africa. From day one, Lourdes is fond of this variety. “It is Sea Waltz, it is like a little machine. It is programmable, producing stems every 11 weeks. It has a great acceptance in the market since it is a true blue color, which is hard to get in nature, and on top it does not shatter.”
In Ecuador the variety is grown by many growers; Florisol, Valleflor, Hacienda Santa fe, Flores del Sur, Much flowers, Flodecol, Savisa, Florsani, Latinflor, Malima, Royal Flowers, Jardines Piaveri, Clementina, Nelpo and Damagro among others.
According to Lourdes, Florisol and Valleflor really got the potential out of the variety that has been imbedded in its DNA. “They are producing the most amazing Sea Waltz that I have ever seen! If the plant is cultivated in a way that it produces one or two stems per plant, the variety yields a super long and beautiful stem. And if cut at an open stage the results are the beautiful stems that we saw at the show in Quito.”
Sea Waltz has been grown in Ecuador since many years. “It replaced the leading variety at the time.” And since the introduction, they have seen the demand increasing year by year. “But this is the first time that I see it grown like this yielding this amazing quality. It is just like when growers produced the 2 meters rose. Let’s see how the market reacts to these amazing stems. So far what I have heard are many WOWs ”
